About

Battery Management System (BMS) is a crucial electronic system designed to manage and protect rechargeable batteries on different levels depending on the type of BMS.

It is working within a battery pack to monitor and manage operation of individual cells as well as whole pack. BMS take care of measuring basic information, managing balancing of each cell in the pack, monitoring and preventing emergency conditions both on cell and pack level. The main purpose of using BMS is to enhance battery performance, increase reliability, extend lifespan and exchange battery information with external control devices.

Basic BMS functionalities

Monitoring

Measuring battery parameters such as:
Voltage: single cell voltage and pack-level voltage
Temperature: single cell temperature and pack-level temperature
Current: input and output current of battery pack
State of health (SoH): overall battery degradation compared to initial value
State of charge (SoC): current capacity of battery (0-100%)

Balancing

Managing energy exchange between single cells to maintain even voltage and state of charge of single cells, maximizing battery capacity and preventing overcharging and undercharging

Protection

Ensuring that the battery is operating within a specified safe range both on cell and pack level by monitoring and preventing unwanted conditions such as:
Over-charge
Over-discharge
Over-current
Over-voltage
Under-voltage
Over-temperature
Under-temperature
Short-circuit

Communication

Providing possibilities of battery operation control as well as data exchange with external systems for the purpose of monitoring and diagnostics

Diagnostics

Identifying and diagnosing issues and malfunctions of the battery pack to provide service information

Computation and identification

Measuring and providing basic battery information such as lifecycle, alarm status count and other
